TEAM TROON TRACKER

Five members of Team Troon had a home game of sorts at this year’s WM Phoenix Open in February. Playing at TPC Scottsdale, just two miles from Troon’s corporate office in Scottsdale, Ariz. They put on a good showing overall, led by Justin Thomas and his tie for fourth place, marking his fourth Top-10 finish in the tournament since 2019. Matt Fitzpatrick (T29), Matt Kuchar (T32), Gary Woodland (T42), and Alex Noren (Missed Cut) also competed in the tournament, which lived up to its famous reputation for being equally (or perhaps more so) about the raucous atmosphere as the golf itself. Michael Hopper, head professional at the Troon-managed Lookout Mountain Golf Club in Phoenix, qualified for his third WM Phoenix Open to go with appearances in 2015 and 2019. He did so after once again winning the Southwest PGA Section Championship. Although he missed the cut, it was still a remarkable achievement for a club pro to make the field.

At last week’s Genesis Invitational at Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, Kuchar(8) and Woodland (T9) led the way for Team Troon with Top-10 finishes while Thomas (T20) continued his strong season. Fitzpatrick and Noren were also in the field but did not make the cut. Kuchar, who now has three Top-10 finishes in the 2022-23 season, is playing in this week’s Honda Classic at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.

On PGA TOUR Champions, the Cologuard Classic by Exact Sciences, is being played next weekend at Omni Tucson National in Tucson, Arizona. Colin Montgomerie will look to build on the two Top-20 finishes he already has this season. Also in the field is Michael Castillo, head golf professional at Kapalua’s Plantation Course, who received a sponsor’s exemption. After winning the Aloha Section PGA Championship last September, Castillo played in The Sony Open in January. The 60-year-old was diagnosed with colon cancer 5 years ago.
