Goodbye hoylake

While Team Troon was never truly in the mix for a win in the season’s last major at Royal Liverpool, there were still some highlights. Troon investor Rory McIlroy led the way with a tie for sixth place, his eighth career Top-10 finish in the championship. Alex Noren just missed adding to his five career Top 20s The Open with a tie for 21st. While Matt Fitzpatrick’s homecoming to his native England didn’t quite turn out the way he wanted it to (he ended up tied for 41st), he surely took some joy from seeing his younger brother Alex excel in his Open Championship debut with a tie for 17th. Gary Woodland came in tied for 55th while Justin Thomas missed the cut. Matt Kuchar is in the field for this week’s 3M Open in Minnesota, as are Thomas – who is making his first appearance in the event – Woodland, and Noren.

On PGA CHAMPIONS, Colin Montgomerie heads back to his native United Kingdom for The Senior Open Championship at Royal Porthcawl in Wales this week. Monty finished ninth in the event last year at Gleneagles in Scotland and tied for 11th in 2021 at Sunningdale Golf Club in England.

In her best result so far of the 2023 season, Yealimi Noh teamed with Soo Boo Jin of South Korea to finish tied for 29th at the Dow Great Lakes Bay Invitational in Michigan this week. There must be something about the alternate shot/best-ball team format used during the event at Midland Country Club that appeals to Noh: Last year she finished in a tie for 10th and the previous year tied for third in the event. She also currently ranks ninth on Driving Distance on the LPGA Tour.
