Numbers Game

Team Troon’s Justin Thomas hit 269 shots at the Wyndham Championship this past weekend. He needed to hit one less. But he didn’t, narrowly missing a chip-in for birdie on his final hole. That meant his tie for 12th in the final tournament of the PGA TOUR’s regular season put him in 71st place on the FedEx Cup standings. But this year only the top 70 qualify for golf’s version of post-season play. While a disappointing end to a tough season, the 30-year-old Thomas took some solace from his struggles.

“Can use adversity as an opportunity to shy away from a challenge, or take it head on. Was a tough season for me, but I actually had fun battling it out and playing golf this week,” he said on X (formerly known as Twitter) afterwards. “It’s why we play. Beyond gutted to miss the playoffs, but I’m proud of how hard I fought #onward.”

As for the rest of Team Troon, moving on to the FedEx St. Jude Championship next week in Memphis are Matt Fitzpatrick (36th) and Matt Kuchar (60th), who is the only player to qualify for the playoffs in each season since the FedEx Cup debuted in 2007. Troon investor Rory McIlroy, who ended up third in FedEx Cup points, is looking to win his third FedEx Cup.

Despite finishing tied for 28th, Gary Woodland came in at 94th in the Fed Ex Cup standings, while Alex Noren finished at 101st.

In the PGA CHAMPIONS Schwab Cup standings, Team Troon’s Colin Montgomerie currently ranks 20th. He is looking to elevate that position this week at the Boeing Classic being played at The Club at Snoqualmie Ridge located outside of Seattle.
