There’s a natural letdown immediately after any major championship, in this case last week’s  2023 U.S. Open. But two members of Team Troon did very well to bounce back quicker than most at the low-scoring Travelers Championship in Connecticut, including Troon investor Rory McIlroy, coming off the disappointment of finishing just one shot behind champion Wyndham Clark last week. 

McIlroy finished the Travelers tied for seventh at 18-under. And Justin Thomas, who ended in a tie for ninth after missing the U.S. Open cut at Los Angeles Country Club. It was his best performance since a tie for 10th at the Valspar Championship back in March. Gary Woodland finished tied for 33rd while Matt Fitzpatrick started off with consecutive rounds of 67 before ending in a tie for 49th. Matt Kuchar, despite a second round 67, missed the cut. He still ranks third on the PGA Tour in Scrambling and first in Sand Saves. 

Thomas and Alex Noren are in the field for this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club in Michigan.

On PGA CHAMPIONS, Colin Montgomerie heads to the U.S. Senior Open at Sentry World in Stevens Point, Wisconsin, this weekend. The Scotsman, who had three second-place finishes in the U.S. Open, won the Senior title back in 2014 by edging Gene Sauers in a playoff. 

Yealimi Noh missed the cut at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship at Baltusrol Golf Club in Springfield, New Jersey. Next up is the 78th U.S. Women’s Open being played for the first time at Pebble Beach July 6-9. Noh has made the cut in her three previous appearances in that national championship. 

Team Troon members Justin Thomas and Gary Woodland ended up in a tie for 14th after both finished at 8-under overall in the Wells Fargo Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, North Carolina, last week. Matt Kuchar wasn’t far behind, coming in tied for 23rd. Matt Fitzpatrick came in 35th, while Troon investor Rory McIlroy (a three-time winner of the event) finished tied for 47^th. Alex Noren missed the cut. Kuchar, who currently ranks 13th in PGA Tour scoring average, will be the lone Team Troon representative at this week’s AT&T Byron Nelson in Texas. The others – especially defending champion Justin Thomas – will be prepping for the season’s second major, the PGA Championship being played at Oak Hill in Rochester, New York, May 18-21.

Colin Montgomerie continues to gain positive momentum on PGA CHAMPIONS. Following up a fifth place finish the prior week at the Insperity Invitational in Texas, he carded a tie for 10th at this past weekend’s Mitsubishi Electric Classic at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth, Georgia. The impressive finishes over the past two weeks have elevated him to 16th in the 2023 Charles Schwab Cup standings. Up next for Monty is the Regions Tradition in Birmingham, Alabama, this weekend.

Yealimi Noh heads to the East Coast this weekend for the LPGA’s Cognizant Founders Cup at Upper Montclair Country Club in New Jersey. It marks the first of four LPGA events being played in the Garden State over the next six week, including the ShopRite LPGA Classic presented by Acer June 7-11 at the Troon-managed Seaview Hotel and Golf Club in Galloway Township near Atlantic City.
